If someone has died in Cumbria, you can register the death with the relevant local registration service. This depends on where the death took place.
It is strongly recommended to use the register office within the district where the death took place, as this helps avoid delays with funeral arrangements. However, if this is not possible, you can provide the details at any register office in England or Wales. This is known as a “declaration”, and the information will be sent to the correct council to complete the registration.
When you make a declaration, you will not be issued documents at that appointment. The details will be sent to the correct registration office, who will complete the registration and issue certificates at a later date. This process may take longer than registering directly with the local office.
If the death took place in Cumberland, you can register with Cumberland Registration Service. If the death took place in Westmorland and Furness, you can register with Westmorland and Furness Registration Service.
If someone has died outside Cumbria, you can register the death at the local register office in England and Wales, or make a declaration in Cumbria. The information will then be sent to the correct office, who will complete the registration. You may need to contact that office directly to arrange certificates.
Once the registration is complete, the registrar will send the Medical Certificate for Burial or Cremation (often called the “green form”) electronically to the funeral director or crematorium.
Certified copies of the death entry can also be purchased. These are needed for pensions, insurance, and financial matters. Usually one or two copies are sufficient.
Certificates are ordered at the end of the registration appointment. The cost is £11 per certificate. Please bring a payment card with you. If you do not have a payment card, the registrar can advise on alternative ways to arrange payment.
They may also offer the Tell Us Once service, which allows you to report a death to most government departments in one step.
